Main research activities |
The
Institute was founded in 1952. The research is conducted by six departments
and two laboratories. The Institute has a staff totaling 111 persons, 27 of
which are scientific staff including 3 habil. doctors and 24 doctors. At the
Institute, respectively, 171 and 12 researchers maintained the doctoral and
habilitated doctoral theses. The researchers have published 45 volumes of
scientific papers under the title "GyvulininkystÄ—" (Animal Husbandry), 16
monographs, textbooks and books, registered 19 patents and received 4 State
Premium of the Republic of Lithuania. The breed of Lithuanian White pigs has
been developed and the breeds of Lithuanian Black-and-White and Lithuanian
Red cattle and Lithuanian Blackface sheep have been improved at the
Institute. The Lithuanian technique for keeping and use of breeding bulls
has been worked out and livestock embryo transplantation applied. Nutrition
of farm animals and efficient utilization of feeds has been scientifically
grounded at the Institute. Indigenous Lithuanian farm animal breeds have
been preserved and studied. New environmentally friendly technologies of
animal housing and welfare are being developed and implemented. |

3. The studies of animal welfare and environmental issues related with
animal production. |

Main
international programmes and projects. The researchers of the Institute
work in co-operation with the researchers from Latvia, Estonia, Poland,
Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Slovakia, Norway, France and the USA, take part in
the project "Evaluation of Lithuanian pig breeding system", supported by the
Swedish Institutional Fund and "Strengthening of control system in the field
of feedstuffs in Lithuania in pursuance of EC legislation" supported by
Netherlands. Researchers take part in Danish investigation project devoted
to probiotics usage in pigs feeding. |

Scientific research in the field of animal and poultry production,
recommendations and consultations on issues of animal and poultry production;
expertise of the chemical composition and quality of feedstuffs; expertise
of construction and reconstruction projects of animal houses; completing of
technical equipment for animal insemination and embryo transfer;
computerized estimation of feed composition and rations; blood typing of
cattle and horses; cryopreservation of animal semen and embryos. |
